April 12-13th 2015 Days 006-007

Hiked to Hawk Mountain Shelter on the 12th. It rained again. Longest we’ve hiked so far. 5.7 Miles. On the way to the shelter we passed a campsite with alot of trash thrown around. Off and Gig checked it out and found 4 cans of tuna, a can of spam, and 2 cans of  string beans. Some poor guy tried to hike with canned food and decided it was too heavy. Another blessing from God.

Got to the shelter around 20:00. The place was packed. The only campsite was right across from the privy. We set up in the rain and ate our new found food and went to bed.

On the morning of the 13th we were still soaked and it was still raining. We got a fire going and roamed the campground looking for things other hikers had left behind. We found the canned man’s campsite. He had left a cast iron frying pan, a huge coleman propane stove, a sleeping bag, a hat, 2 jars of beef and chicken bouillon cubes, and a pair of sunglasses.

So, we got the stove lit, cleaned the frying pan and had a big breakfast of fried spam and eggs.

We decided to stay that night to stay warm by the fire. We were the only people able to start a fire. We shared the fire with a few water logged hikers. Off and Gig walked five miles to get the rest of the canned man’s food and we ate another huge rice, salami, corn, carrot, rice, and canned ham dinner.

I pray that God blesses the canned man and allows him to come back to the trail again; better prepared. He was a Blessing to us.

Want to bed wet and cold, but our stomachs were stuffed.

April 11, 2015 Day 005

Hiked off of Springer Mountain and the trail was alot easier than the Approach Trail. Got some Sun and was able to dry out a little.

Hiked to Stover Creek Shelter. Camped at an amazing site down by the Creek. Had a babbling brook sound all night. Viki and I deleted the nature sound apps off of our phones. Don’t need them anymore.

Gig found a half eaten bag of tortillas in the woods. Some poor hiker had too much weight and dumped them. They were not wet, moldy, or out of date so we cooked them over the fire and put chili in them. God still gives manna from Heaven!

April 10, 2015 Day 004

And then the rains came…

It began to rain today while heading to Springer Mountain. We made it though. The Approach Trail was amazingly strenuous. Many people completely skip it. They get dropped off a mile or so passed Springer Mountain and then backtrack to the summit. I did not know. But even if I did we would have still started at the Approach Trail.

But we Made It!

April 08, 2015 Day 002

Got up early…

First Morning

First Morning

Hit the trail hurting after the Falls. Hiked as far as we could. Met an man named Chris on the trail and he introduced us to his dog moonshine.

Chris walked with us for awhile, but we take alot of breaks so he went on ahead.

We hiked until dark and camped on to of a mountain. We ran out of water so Gig and Off walked 5 miles to get us some at a hikers inn. The people there were great and gave them water and fed them. When they got back we ate and went to bed.

April 07, 2015 Day 001

And it begins… We got picked up today at 04:30. We managed to stuff all of our gear and ourselves into a minivan. It was a tight squeeze…

We made it to Amicalola Falls State Park around 08:00. There we signed the Appalachian Trail Register and I assigned our Trail names.

Me: Trail Preacher “TP”

Viki: Trail Preacher’s Wife “Tipawa”

Lil’ John: God is Gracious “GIG”

Crystal: Tinkerbell

Katie: Repunzel

Andrew: Old Faithful “Off”

After registering we headed to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail Approach Trail.

We started hiking. We didn’t know that Amicalola Falls had a staircase with over 600 steps.

It was not easy, but we made it to the top of the falls and this was our reward.

March 29, 2015 AT Preparation 9

Hey Everyone (who sees this…),
Still in preparation mode. I have not stopped since this whole thing started, but still not giving up.

We have almost everything we need. I keep having to change our equipment list because of expense and weight. Most of us don’t realize how much something really weighs until we have to carry it for 4 to 12 hours a day.

I have lost track of the days so I can’t give you a complete rundown of all that has happened. I was trying but got sidetracked.

In the last week we went to McKay’s books to sell stuff twice, had two yard sales, went to Bass Pro shops twice, and went to Good Will three times.  I am waiting till 6AM to set up another yard sale, I’m hoping we can sell a lot of stuff; with only a week and a half till we leave it’s getting down to the wire.

God Bless,
John

March 20, 2015 AT Preparation 8

Had another divine appointment today. I went to a class at the VA. There I spoke to a man who “just happened” to be a Park Ranger! Spent an hour and a half discussing the ins and outs of trail and wild life. He gave me a class on Black Bears; he used to work with them on the West Coast. He sacrificed his time to make sure I knew what I needed to know to take my family up in to the mountains. He is an amazing man and I am blessed to have been given the opportunity to talk him.

Again, God is Awesome!
